ABOUT

MISSION AND HISTORY

Mōkau Museum is dedicated to making accessible the rich tapestry of artefacts, documents, and photographs that hold significance for the our region. We are passionate about preserving and sharing the diverse narratives that shape our community's identity and heritage. Our mission is to ensure that the stories of those who have come before us are told and cherished, allowing future generations to connect with their past.

To facilitate this mission, our collections are thoughtfully categorized to highlight various aspects of life in the region. Each category reflects our commitment to showcasing the diverse heritage and cultural richness of our community. Here is an overview of our key collections:

Māori Collection
Our Māori collection serves as a testament to the cultural heritage and artistry of the indigenous Māori people.

Featured within this collection are treasured taonga (treasures) that embody significant cultural and spiritual value. Among the artefacts are taiaha (traditional wooden weapons), toki (tools used in carving and building), tiki (carved figures representing ancestors), and various forms of heru (hair combs) and patu (short clubs). Each piece of the collection offers insight into Māori customs, craftsmanship, and the enduring significance of these items within the community.

Natural History
Our natural history collection highlights the unique ecological history of the Tainui region. This includes fascinating discoveries such as moa bones, showcasing remnants of the large flightless birds that once roamed New Zealand, as well as whalebones collected from the coastal areas, which tell the stories of the region's marine life. Additionally, we house a range of fossils that illustrate the geological evolution of our landscape, offering a glimpse into the ancient past.

Township History
Delve into the township's rich history through our collection of items that reflect daily life, commerce, and communication. Here you will find historical post and telephone equipment, a glimpse into the early days of connectivity. Our collection of groceries, a vintage projector, and a historic fire extinguisher each encapsulate aspects of the community’s growth. Unique artefacts like a cannonball, which may evoke tales of local skirmishes or defense, and a streetlamp that lights the way to the past provide fascinating points of connection to our historical narrative. Furthermore, we include dentistry tools, presenting insights into the evolution of healthcare within the township.

Industry History
Explore the industrial heritage of the region through our array of equipment and tools that paved the way for economic development. Our collection houses beautifully crafted saddles, essential for early transport and livestock management, alongside items related to milling and mining that mark the region’s industrious spirit. Significant pieces of farming equipment demonstrate the agricultural advancements that have sustained the community.

Family History
Family history is an essential thread woven into the fabric of Mōkau Museum. Our collection consists of books, maps, and written texts that not only provide historical context but also document personal stories and lineages. Newspapers from different eras chronicle the events that shaped our community, whilst photographs immortalize cherished moments, individuals, and families, allowing visitors to delve into their own heritage as they explore our collection.

At Mōkau Museum, we invite you to experience the profound narratives of the Tainui region through our thoughtfully curated collections. Each artefact, document, and photograph serves as a vital link to the past, bridging generations and fostering a deeper understanding of our shared history.
